Lotus Beneath the Dragon Arch

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This standing bodhisattva in full gold holds a single lotus. Beneath a tall, tiered crown the eyes are lowered in calm; one hand at the side lightly clasps the lotus stem, which falls in a diagonal across the body as the bud opens above the shoulder, while the other hand rests low against the sash. Golden robes descend in layered folds from the beaded chest ornament to the feet, light travelling slowly across the drapery. Behind rises a great pointed-arch aureole carved edge to edge with dragons among clouds, their gilded scales touched with teal, framing a vermilion panel and a round head halo. A double lotus pedestal sits on a hexagonal throne with small guardian beasts at its corners. For all its radiance the mood is restrained — a commanding presence for a shrine's central place or the main wall of a hall.
