Holding the Stem, Astride the Lion

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva rides a standing lion. Beneath a towering jewelled crown over deep-blue curls, he sits composed on the lion's back, one leg folded and one foot pendant on a small lotus rest, his left hand raising a slender golden stem tipped with a small bud. Behind his head, a leaf-shaped aureole in openwork scrolling lotus rings a central lotus medallion. The lion beneath him is anything but quiet: eyes round and glaring, mouth wide open showing fangs, mane in layered curls, a golden bell at its chest and a finely patterned saddle cloth on its back, standing four-square on a hexagonal plinth carved with lotuses and beadwork. Stillness above, ferocity below — warm in tone, the piece suits a shrine or the principal position in a room, holding majesty and serenity in a single figure.
