Lotus Throne on the White Elephant

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned figure joins a lotus throne to a white elephant. Crowned in an elaborate jewelled headdress over deep-blue curls, the bodhisattva sits in full lotus on a broad lotus pedestal, both hands holding a golden rectangular tablet upright before the chest. Behind the head rises a leaf-shaped aureole worked entirely in openwork scrolling lotus, framing a serene, downcast face. Below the throne stands the elephant, pale and almost white, caparisoned with flower-studded harness, each of its four feet set upon a small lotus, tusks gently curved and trunk hanging still. The warm golden wood of the upper figure plays against the quiet pallor of the elephant — a rare riding composition, made to be enshrined at a shrine's main position or to hold a room at first glance.
