Sword Raised, Astride the Lion

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva sits before a pointed-arch aureole, mounted on a recumbent lion. Crowned and downcast-eyed, he raises a long sword upright in his right hand and holds a rolled scroll in his left, one foot pendant and resting on a small lotus beside the lion. The lion, its mane in tight curls and its gaze round and calm, lies along a rectangular stand carved with a lotus. The aureole behind is filled with curling clouds and flame scrolls, ringed by five small seated Buddhas, with a lotus medallion halo behind the head. Beaded ornaments cross the chest and the drapery is dense with fine folds. Warm in tone yet quietly commanding, the piece suits a shrine or the principal position in a room, where it settles the space with composed authority.
