Sealed Hands on the Great Lotus

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This golden bodhisattva sits in full lotus on an enormous lotus throne. A tall jewelled crown rises above the lowered eyes; both hands are pressed together at the chest in a seal, beaded ornaments fall across the torso, and a small wheel-shaped pendant hangs at the waist. Long ribbons and sword-like implements hang down behind the shoulders. The great pointed, leaf-shaped aureole behind him is gold throughout, an inner ring of flame motifs drawn tight, an outer ring of flowing cloud scrolls, with small flying figures in coloured dress set into its edges and a tiny golden bell at its peak. Beneath the lotus is a stepped golden pedestal, and at its front sits a small laughing figure with a bare belly and a string of beads — a touch of warmth in all the splendour. Radiant yet gentle, the piece suits enshrinement at the principal position of a shrine, or as the anchoring presence of a hall or entrance.
