At Ease with a Scroll

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This silver-grey bodhisattva sits in the posture of royal ease, one leg folded and one foot let down, completely at rest. She wears a small crown, long strands of hair falling past her ears onto her shoulders; in her left hand she holds a rolled scroll, while her right hand, lowered beside her knee, fingers a string of prayer beads. Broad robes wrap her in layer upon layer, the folds gathering into whorls at the knees before spreading slowly toward the edge of the seat. At the front of the cloud-carved base a curly-maned beast lies with its head raised, motion below answering stillness above. The whole figure keeps a single soft silver-grey lustre, its smooth face set off against the intricate drapery. Made to be enshrined at the side of a shrine, or placed in a study or an entrance hall — a quiet image that settles the heart at a glance.
