At Rest against an Elephant

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This silver-grey figure shows a monk elder seated at ease, leaning against a reclining elephant. Shaven-headed with long earlobes and a small topknot, his eyes lowered and nearly closed, a short beard at his chin, he lets the robe fall loosely from one shoulder and bares his chest; in one hand he holds a curved branch across his body, while the other rests lightly on the elephant's head. One leg is folded, one foot hangs down to the cloud-carved base, and the drapery spreads across knees and seat like water. The elephant lies with legs tucked beneath it, its trunk curled against the plinth and eyes half open — tame as an old friend. Man and beast share a single soft silver-grey lustre, unshowy yet full of quiet weight. A companionable presence for a study, a tea room or a living corner: a figure that slows you down simply by sitting beside you.
