This polychrome set of three centres on a bodhisattva seated in full lotus upon an enormous teal-green lotus, a blue guardian figure seated at either side. She wears a towering jewelled crown; behind her rises an openwork flame-shaped aureole in layered scrolls, its niches holding tiny seated Buddhas. Eyes lowered in a soft smile, hands folded in meditation in her lap, she is draped with beaded necklaces and patterned robes where gold, red and deep blue meet. The lotus petals are plump and studded with golden buds; beneath stands a high altar carved with a golden lion, a lotus lamp at each front corner. To the left, a wrathful blue guardian holds an upright sword, red flames leaping behind him; to the right, another blue figure sits in meditation within a flaming halo. Stillness and might in one frame — a set for the main position of a shrine, or to give a room its solemn centre.

    The crowned, seated figure rests upon deep-green lotus petals, with both hands cradling a small object in front of the torso. A pointed, leaf-shaped halo—adorned with intricate, delicate patterns—frames the figure’s head and shoulders. I first notice the small, bright highlights on the broad, green lotus petals, then the figure’s hands, gathered together before the knees. While the tiered lotus pedestal elevates the figure, the face at the center remains gentle and approachable.

    The dark blue seated figure on the left is holding a long sword-shaped object. The red flame halo is rolled up high to one side, and the colorful clothes are spread on the legs of the cross-legged person. I like the way the red outer edge rolls to one side. The vertical holding object stops next to the blue face. The curves and straight lines complement each other, making the compact sitting posture very tense.

    Small seated figure (on the right) with a dark-toned face, holding a long sword upright. The flame-shaped nimbus is more compact, encircling the head and shoulders, while the hem of the robe rests upon a low platform. My eye is drawn first to the long object held in front, then to the slender lines trailing down the other side. Though the figure’s posture is minimal, the orientation is clear, all framed within a red-hued outer ring.
