A Buddha Realm Across the Peaks

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This is a horizontally spread, polychrome group of many niches — a three-dimensional panorama of a Buddha realm. The background is ridge upon ridge of mountains in teal-green and gold, the peaks running on like waves; along the top, seven seated Buddhas occupy seven niches, each on a lotus throne in red and yellow robes before a golden arched light-niche, regular as a row of heavenly palaces. Below, among clouds in the mountain folds, more than a dozen bodhisattvas and guardians stand — some holding lotuses, some implements — varied in scale and ranked along the slopes. Each end closes with a multi-storey golden pagoda set within a flaming, radiating aureole, with glaring guardians and orange-red trees before it, the teal, green, gold and red filling the whole surface with life. Water patterns finish the lower edge, and a wood-toned offering table with a few small figures may stand before it. It has the scale of an entire wall — made to be enshrined on the main wall of a shrine, or to serve as the commanding horizontal centrepiece of a room.
