Thousand Arms Astride a Beast

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned group is led by a dark-wood many-armed bodhisattva, with four smaller pale-wood figures ranged in front. The main figure carries several small faces stacked above her crown; her principal hands are joined at the chest and cradle a bowl in the lap, while a thousand arms unfold in layers behind her to fill an entire circular halo, each hand holding an implement, and two tall ritual staffs rise at her sides nearly level with the halo itself. She sits in full lotus astride a roaring lion-like beast, its mane curling, all four paws planted, above a multi-tiered altar carved with a dharma wheel. The dark main figure anchors the set with gravity, while the four pale figures in front form a row of their own: at the centre a seated figure on a lotus with palms joined and eyes lowered; to the left an armoured guardian seated with a sword and a long-bearded elder seated with a staff; to the right an armoured guardian standing with a spear on a cloud-patterned base. Dark against light, stillness against force — a group for the principal position of a room, or as a weighty offering before a shrine.

  1. Figure with multiple arms, mounted on a beast (back row)XM26-0336Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

With hands pressed together in prayer (anjali mudra) before the chest, multiple arms and elongated attributes fan out from the sides. A circular, densely patterned halo frames the dark-toned figure, while the head of a beast emerges from below. My gaze travels from the joined hands, follows the array of arms outward, and finally rests upon the upturned head of the beast—much like reading a painting that unfolds before one’s eyes.

  2. Figure with palms pressed together on a lotus pedestal, front rowXM26-0336-M02Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The crowned figure sits with palms pressed together in a gesture of prayer, the robe draping over crossed legs, flanked by broad lotus petals. Its light, warm-toned appearance allows it to stand out against the darker, larger figure behind it, conveying a sense of serene stillness. I particularly like how the wide, rounded lotus petals cradle the crossed legs; with the hands joined at the chest, the light-colored figure emerges from the dense, dark silhouette behind it, creating a striking focal point.

  3. Seated figure with left front armorXM26-0336-M03Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The small armored figure sits in a compact posture, with one leg propped up, a long object held diagonally in front of the seat, and a wide arc around the shoulder straps. The square platform stabilizes the complex outline, and the relationship between the hands and knees is clear. I will first look at the bent legs and the objects placed diagonally, and then at the streamers wrapped around the shoulders. There are many twists and turns in the sitting posture, but it is still firmly caught by the square platform below.

  4. The leftmost statue with long beardXM26-0336-M04Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The leftmost statue has a long beard hanging down from the chest, a long knife-shaped object standing beside the body, one leg raised, and the robe spread downwards along the sitting posture. I like the direction in which the long beard falls along the chest, with the slender object on one side raised, and the sleeves on the other side gathered, so that the little figure can maintain a correct rhythm in the group.

  5. Standing figure in armor, holding an object (on the right)XM26-0336-M05Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

Standing figure in armor, holding a long object. Ribbons swirl high behind the shoulders, while layers of robes and armor cascade downward; the feet rest firmly upon a base adorned with cloud motifs. I first notice the ribbons unfurling behind the shoulders, followed by the long object held upright in the hands. While the outer edges extend outward, the figure remains firmly grounded, as if gathering all its strength within its central silhouette.
