Triad on a Lotus Throne

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This group is carved throughout in a warm, golden wood tone, with no polychromy at all — its presence comes from the carving alone. The central Buddha sits in full lotus on an ample lotus throne, hands folded in the lap, a swastika at the chest, hair in neat snail curls and an expression of complete calm; behind him a leaf-shaped aureole rises high, its whole surface worked with dense swirling cloud scrolls that gather to a point at the top. Beneath the throne stands a railed altar carved with a dharma wheel and scrolling foliage. A disciple stands at each side with palms joined — one youthful and clear-featured, the other aged and grave with white brows — each on his own lotus base. Before the altar, three small seated figures sit in a row: two crowned bodhisattvas with implements at the sides and a small monk-form figure between them, all on small lotus seats. One great figure and three small ones, ordered front to back — a set made to be enshrined whole at the principal place of a shrine, quietly forming an altar-field of its own.

Select by position in the image; each figure can be enquired about separately. Numbers identify the intended work.

The left standing image is cropped at the edge of the frame on site, and the complete outline needs to be verified separately.

  1. Seated figure, center, on a golden lotus pedestalXM26-0335Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

With hands resting before the knees, the figure sits upon broad, substantial lotus petals; a pointed, leaf-shaped halo—adorned with intricate, scrolling patterns—frames the face. I am drawn to the small, open space created by the hands in front of the knees. The expansive lotus petals cradle the figure from below, and even with the dense, elaborate patterns behind it, the serene, unadorned surface of the central figure remains the focal point.

  2. Standing statue with palms together on the left sideXM26-0335-M02Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The standing figure on the left side has both hands clasped together, the face is slightly toward the center, and the wide sleeves hang down from the palms, forming a continuous line with the robe. I would first look at the clasped hands and slightly lowered face, and then go down along the folds of the clothes; there is no big outward movement, and this convergence can make the gaze stay longer.

  3. Standing figure with long eyebrows and palms pressed together (on the right)XM26-0335-M03Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The long eyebrows hang down along both sides of the face, the hands are clasped in front of the chest, the wide sleeves and robe stretch toward the feet, and the round lotus pedestal firmly supports the standing posture. I first noticed the light color of the eyebrows and the undulations of the face, and then looked at the hands close to the chest. The long coat hung from the shoulders, giving a smooth background to the face with rich details.

  4. Seated figure wearing a jeweled crown, left side of the front rowXM26-0335-M04Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

Small, crowned, cross-legged figure, left side of the front row: one hand is slightly raised, the other rests beside the knee, with delicate adornments concentrated on the chest. I appreciate how the small crown and the vertical lines falling from the shoulders frame the face, while the folds of the robe spread gently across the knees—though this figure occupies only a small space within the front row, its posture possesses a sense of complete, self-contained integrity.

  5. Small seated figure, center of the front rowXM26-0335-M05Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

Small seated figure, center of the front row: one hand hangs down, while the other rests before the abdomen. The robes drape over the legs in clean, sweeping arcs, and the low lotus pedestal retains a smooth, rounded contour. My gaze lingers on the figure’s clasped hands; the folds of the robe cascade from the shoulders to the knees, their simple outlines ensuring the figure remains distinct against the dense background.

  6. Seated figure wearing a jeweled crown, right side of the front rowXM26-0335-M06Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

Small seated figure (on the right) featuring a distinct headdress; one hand is raised, while the other rests upon the knee. The lines of the robes flow from the shoulders down to the lotus-petal base. The slender upper body contrasts with the rounded, low-profile base, creating a balance between lightness and substance. I am drawn to the interplay between the delicate details near the shoulders and the gentle curve at the knee; the upward-reaching headdress and the outward-spreading lotus base lend this small figure a sense of stability and rhythmic completeness.
