A Triad with a Figure at Ease

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This polychrome group sets three figures with golden leaf-shaped aureoles in a back row, and a fourth figure seated at ease in front. The central Buddha sits in full lotus on a great red lotus throne, robes in vermilion and deep blue with a swastika at the chest, one hand cradling a small golden object in the lap; behind him the aureole, worked all over with streaming cloud lines, rises to a pointed arch above a carved, railed golden altar. A standing bodhisattva flanks each side, robes dense with floral brocade, holding lotus stems and ritual implements on coloured lotus bases, their aureoles echoing the central one at a smaller scale. The front figure is another mood entirely: blue hair drawn up high, golden crown and beaded ornaments, pale skin and robes covered in floral medallions, one knee raised and one arm resting loosely at its side on a dark red wooden stand. The solemnity of the three and the ease of the one answer each other — a group made to be enshrined together, or displayed as one complete arrangement.

  1. Polychrome seated figure (center, back row)XM26-0334-M01Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The orange-red cloak is slanted over the shoulders, with one hand hanging down on the knees, and the other holding a small object in front of the body. The wide golden pointed leaves are surrounded by halo. I like the difference between one hand held in front of the body and one hand dropped to the knee. The large colorful lotus petals spread out to both sides, but the central face remains quiet, allowing the eyes to settle somewhere.

  2. Standing figure holding a branch (left, back row)XM26-0334-M02Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

The flower branch extends diagonally upward from the left side of the statue, with a palm raised beside the shoulder. The red lower garment is intertwined with yellow ribbons. The halo of the golden pointed leaves highlights the slender figure, and the lotus pedestal spreads out low. I would follow the diagonal flower branches and see the raised hands. The yellow belt would lead my gaze downwards, and the slender posture would have several more light turns.

  3. Standing figure holding a branch (right, back row)XM26-0334-M03Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

: A figure on the right holds a flowering branch. A pale purple ribbon winds over the shoulder and around the waist, while a red garment falls downward; the pointed leaves, backlit, retain a crisp, defined edge. I particularly like the arc of the pale purple ribbon as it drapes from the hand, contrasting with the slender branch that extends in the opposite direction—this interplay of directions lends a touch of softness to an otherwise upright, formal stance.

  4. Figure in a relaxed, informal posture (*zizai zuo*)XM26-0334Appreciation · Viewer’s Perspective

One arm rests upon a raised knee, while the other hand falls beside the seat; a colorful, long robe drapes across the bent and crossed legs. The torso turns ever so slightly, yet the crown ornament and the line of the shoulders remain perfectly poised. My eyes are drawn first to the arm resting by the knee and the subtly tilted head; the expansive folds of the robe spread out naturally, as if momentarily softening the rigid, orderly arrangement of the surrounding figures.
