This standing Buddha in a golden-toned finish is shown in profile, and age lies gently all over it. Face and chest are a deep brown, almost black, with a quiet sheen; the topknot, hands, feet and robe borders carry gold, like light showing through old lacquer. The robe is grey-brown, its folds falling layer upon layer and gathering into deep pleats down the front, the wide sleeves hanging loose. One hand touches fingertips together at the chest; the other reaches forward, palm down, as if he were about to speak or to take a step. His feet stand on a lotus pedestal of grey and gold. Its charm is exactly this unretouched oldness — a figure for a study, a tea room or some quiet corner, to sit across from time itself.
