Guardian before the Buddha

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned set pairs a seated Buddha with a young guardian. Above, the Buddha sits in full lotus on a great open lotus throne, one palm raised before his chest, the other cradling a small tiered pagoda in his lap, a swastika at his chest and his gaze lowered in calm. Below the throne stands a carved altar table with gilded corners, a small guardian tucked at either side. In front, on a rock-form base, stands a boyish figure in scale armour: a tiny pagoda crowns his head, one hand lifts high, the other grips a ring, and a flame wheel turns beneath his feet, his sash curling behind him and a broad smile on his face. Stillness above, motion below — a set made to be enshrined together, or to give a room a composed centre.
