Golden Figure with Fanned Arms

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This small standing figure is gold throughout, and its three-quarter turn makes it even more rewarding than a front view. The bodhisattva wears a crown; the principal hands are joined at the chest, holding a small object between the fingers. Behind, to both sides, row upon row of arms unfold in sequence — like a fan, like rays — each in a different gesture, yet paler than the body itself, as if standing half a step back in attendance. The long robe falls to the feet in tiered folds, the gold mottled and aged all over. Behind rises an aureole in the shape of a pointed leaf, gathered high, its whole face dense with spiralling scrolls, drawing even the spread arms into its outline. Beneath the feet is a small two-tiered lotus, then a rock-form base with a faint green wash among the stones. Small in volume, yet the opened arms fill out its presence: made for a wall niche or a desk-side corner, and best appreciated up close.
