Meditation Seal in Flames

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This polychrome Buddha, a companion in form to the raised-palm version, differs in its gesture: both hands rest in his lap in the meditation seal, cradling a small golden treasure, and he sits in full lotus in settled stillness. Deep blue snail-curls carry a red jewel at the topknot, the eyes are lowered shut, and a swastika marks the chest. The orange robe's fine floral patterning answers the flower roundels painted across the dark lower garment. Beyond the circular halo, the great pointed aureole opens high, red and orange flames rolling like surf, cloud-heads in teal, yellow and orange set along its rim. The lotus throne layers pink petals, a gold-green heart and red-gold petal rings. Profoundly quiet, he suits a place of enshrinement and meditation, where a single glance settles the mind.
