Kneeling in Profile

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned figure of a kneeling monk with joined palms is seen from the side and slightly behind. His head is shaven, and only half of his aged face shows in profile, the cheekbone and neck lines carved with realism. He kneels on an oval rock base whose surface is covered with radiating chisel marks. The robe covers his shoulders and back, the cloth sliding down the spine, a curved edge of fabric hanging at the waist, the hem spread flat over the folded legs with a smooth sheen. His palms meet at his chest; from this angle the joined hands and the lowered gaze point the same way. The whole is an aged copper tone — the robe a bright amber-orange, the head and hands darker. Low and attentive in posture, it suits the side of a shrine or a corner of a meditation space: a companion in quiet.
