Bowing with Joined Palms

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned standing figure, palms joined, is an elderly monk with a short beard. He bows his head slightly and leans gently forward, hands pressed together at his chest as if in greeting to someone before him. The cropped hair and close beard are finely worked; the lowered eyes give him a humble, kindly air. The robe is slung over one shoulder, its folds falling from the chest, a sash drawn in at the waist, the long cloth reaching to his feet; he stands barefoot on a thin, round rock base. The robe is a bright orange-copper while the head, face and hands are darker and rougher in texture, a clear contrast with the smooth drapery. That slight bow turns an upright stance into something reverent. A figure for a shrine, a study or a tea room, made for everyday quiet contemplation.
