Palms Joined on the Rock

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned seated Buddha rests on a bare rock, palms joined at the chest. One leg is folded up on the stone while the other hangs down, the bare foot touching the ground. The hair is a grey-blue knot of curls set against the warm copper tone of the whole figure. The robe crosses the left shoulder and streams in fine folds down the pendant leg to the foot. There is no lotus throne and no aureole — only an unworked rock, which makes the seated figure feel all the quieter. The copper surface is mellow, light moving slowly through the drapery. It belongs in a courtyard, a tea room or an entryway, like a pause encountered on a mountain path, making passers-by soften their steps without thinking.
