Tall Crown, Cupped Pearl

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned standing bodhisattva with a carved aureole wears a tall crown and holds an object in each hand. A small Buddha sits within the crown; the right hand is raised, pinching a slender, leaf-shaped implement, while the left hand at the waist cups a small round object. Layered beaded necklaces cross the chest, and long sashes loop down past the knees through robes worked in dense, orderly folds. Behind the figure, the pointed back panel is carved entirely with spiral clouds, among which several small seated Buddhas rest, flying celestials leaning out near the top. The figure stands on a full lotus pedestal over an octagonal base of fine, dense carving. In a single honey wood tone, all the richness is in the detail — a rewarding piece for close viewing, suited to a shrine's side position or a display shelf where it can be studied at leisure.
