Lowered Palm, Held Bowl

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned standing Buddha lowers one hand and cradles a small bowl in the other. The right arm hangs naturally at the side, palm turned forward; the left hand, at the waist, holds a bowl in which a small lotus rests. A swastika marks the chest, and the robe crosses the left shoulder and falls in long, spare folds past the knees. Behind him a tall, pointed aureole is filled edge to edge with carved clouds; several small seated Buddhas rest among them, and flying celestials unfurl their sashes near the top. He stands on a wide lotus pedestal over an octagonal base ringed with petals and scrolling vines. In one even, honeyed wood tone and with eyes lowered, the figure has a composed, grounded stillness — made for a shrine, or for standing quietly in an entryway or study and settling the air of the room.
