This bodhisattva in a deep wood tone sits at ease upon a rock. A tall crown, set with a small seated figure, rises above his lowered eyes. He sits high on the rock with one knee raised and an arm resting loosely over it, while the other leg hangs down, the toe of his foot touching a small lotus. Below the rock, carved waves roll and surge toward the front of the base, as if the sound of water had not yet stilled. His chest is bare, hung with fine golden necklaces and bead strings at breast and waist; armlets and leg ornaments are picked out in gold as well, and long hair falls over his shoulders. The skirt pours from his knees in layers, spilling in slow ripples over the edge of the rock. The whole piece is a deep reddish-brown wood tone, the gold ornaments glinting here and there within the dark. Relaxed yet weighty, it belongs in a tea room, a study or a place of quiet retreat, where it helps the heart settle down, slowly.
