Bowl Held Beneath the Pointed Arch

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned Buddha sits cross-legged before a tall, pointed aureole. Curls cover the head, an urna marks the brow and a swastika rests on the chest; the eyes are lowered and both hands cradle a round alms bowl in the lap above a great lotus throne whose petals open in two full tiers. The aureole rises behind him in a pointed arch edged with layered flames, its field carved with coiling dragons and auspicious beasts on lotus stands, a winged garuda spreading at the very top, and a round halo framing the head. Below the lotus, a railed rectangular plinth carries interlaced floral scrolls and key-fret bands. Warm in tone and dense with carving that never turns restless, it is made to be enshrined whole, or to steady a room at first sight.
