Ruyi atop the Elephant

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This bodhisattva in warm reddish wood tones rides a recumbent elephant. A tall openwork crown rises above the lowered, smiling gaze; seated in full lotus on a high, layered lotus throne, the figure holds a ruyi sceptre diagonally across the chest with both hands, perfectly at ease. Drapery folds follow the crossed legs downward, beaded ornaments resting at the belly. Below the throne the elephant lies folded at rest, head bowed, a decorated harness on its brow and a small lotus bud perched on top, a lotus-carved saddle cloth across its back with sashes falling at the sides. An oval plinth with a band of lotus petals carries the whole group. The reddish tone is mellow and deep; the elephant's steadiness lifts the lightness of the lotus seat. Made for a shrine, or for a corner of a hall, where its quiet weight settles the room.
