Sword and Scroll on the Lion

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva sits on a great lotus throne carried by a recumbent lion. The figure wears a tall openwork crown with a small image set into it, eyes lowered; one hand raises a flaming sword upright, its blade curling like fire, while the other holds a horizontal scripture scroll across the knees. Robes fall in layered folds, fine beaded necklaces at the chest, long sashes winding down. The lotus petals are full and rounded, gathering into a circular seat; beneath, the lion lies with curled mane and wide, glaring eyes, a cloud-patterned saddle cloth across its back and all four paws tucked firmly before it. The pale wood tone is soft and even; sword and scroll, one upright and one across, hold vigour and learning in a single figure. For a study or a shrine — a quiet companion for reading and collecting the mind.
