Two Buddhas, One Shrine

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This golden shrine holds two seated Buddhas side by side, composed as a single small chapel. The niche rises to a pointed arch layered with scrolling carving, crowned by a small stupa bearing a dharma wheel, with lesser spires and curling capitals at the sides. Within, the left Buddha cradles a small vessel in his lap, a swastika at his chest; the right raises one hand in a seal before him, the other resting on his knee. Each lets one foot descend onto a small lotus before the seat, and robes pour from the shoulders in rounded, flowing folds. Between them stands a small altar with fruit and floral offerings, and seven tiny Buddha reliefs stud the back wall. Entirely gold, dense with carving yet warm in feeling — a complete altar in itself, made to be enshrined whole at the principal position of a shrine.
