The Sword-Bearing Guardian

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This seated guardian is clad from head to foot in gold. A bearded warrior with his hair drawn up, he wears scale armour worked in fine detail — patterned pauldrons, belt and battle skirt — with crimson lining showing through the seams and the depths of the drapery, red answering gold and adding weight. He sits squarely on a square plinth, one hand gripping a long sword held diagonally across his body, the other pressed upon his knee, one bare foot planted forward beyond the seat, steady as a rock. Behind his shoulders two broad ribbons loop into great rings, as if lifted by a strong wind. At his feet a tortoise and a serpent coil together, the snake rising from the tortoise's back, heads raised toward each other — a quiet emblem of guardianship. Splendid in gold yet stern without anger, the piece is made to watch over a shrine niche, or to hold the commanding position in a space that needs presence and gravity.
