Armour Above the Clouds

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This standing guardian in pale wood tone is clad head to foot in armour. His hair is bound in a tall topknot beneath a jewelled helmet-crown; fine fish-scale mail covers his body, a beast-mask medallion centres the breastplate, and the belt is drawn neat and tight, both hands folded one over the other at his waist in a stance of complete steadiness. Behind his shoulders the sashes loop into two great sweeping rings, and long ribbons run down the armoured skirt to his feet, joining the rolling clouds underfoot in one continuous flowing line. Beneath the clouds sits a plain rectangular plinth, its face marked only by a single gilt spray of lotus scroll — restraint set against abundance. Milky pale throughout, the face faintly coloured, the gaze commanding but not angry. A figure to stand by a shrine doorway or at the entrance of a room: once he takes his place, the air settles.
