Seated Upon the Lion

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This bodhisattva sits in a pointed-arch shrine upon the back of a lion. Crowned and serene, he rides half-cross-legged on the recumbent beast, one foot resting on a small lotus before the seat, his right hand poised in a gentle seal at his chest, his left laid on his knee, eyes lowered in a soft smile. The lion turns its head back with mouth open, mane rolling in layer upon layer, yet without a trace of ferocity — more an old friend keeping guard. Behind the bodhisattva stands a tall leaf-pointed aureole carved all over with fine cloud scrolls, gathering to its tip. Auspicious clouds spread beneath the lion's paws, and the octagonal base is finished with gilt scrollwork. Warm golden wood tones, with only the faces lightly coloured — bright, never garish. Enshrined in a shrine or set as the focus of a room, it holds dignity and warmth in a single presence.
