At Ease Above the Clouds

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This pale-wood bodhisattva sits at ease. His hair is bound in a high knot beneath a soft veil, his eyes lowered, as he rests on a gnarled rock-like seat: one knee raised with the right hand laid loosely over it, the other foot hanging down, its toes just touching a curl of cloud below. Long robes pour from his shoulders and fall in slow layers over the knees, the hems suspended at the sides of the seat in soft arcs, like water running gently down. Swirling clouds roll around the base, which resolves into undulating wave lines, holding the whole figure steady yet light. No colour anywhere — only the quiet pale tone and an expression utterly without strain. It belongs in a tea room, a study or a bright corner, where it helps whoever sits near it to let go.
