Eight Arms Before the Round Halo

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This many-armed seated bodhisattva is finished in a pale wood tone. Crowned high, he sits in full lotus on a great multi-layered lotus throne, his eight arms opening from shoulders and back to either side — some forming seals before his chest, others reaching calmly outward — abundant, yet never disordered. Crown jewel, chest necklace, armlets and bracelets are all present, the carving fine but never crowded. Most striking is the enormous round aureole behind him, left perfectly plain, which sets off the many-armed silhouette and the bead-edged head halo with complete clarity. Below stands an octagonal throne ringed in layers of lotus petals, fretwork and scrolls. Pale and clean throughout, like freshly sawn timber — a piece for a shrine, a tea room or an uncluttered space, made to be looked at for a long time.
