XM26-0138 / Wood tone · Single piece

Seated on the Square Throne

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned Buddha sits upon a square throne. In full lotus, he raises his right palm before his chest while the left hand settles over his knee, fingertips pointing down — one gesture rising, one descending, in perfect balance. His coiled hair is tinted deep blue with a red jewel at the crown, and a short moustache and beard give the face an unusually approachable character. Behind him the aureole gathers to a flame-shaped point, its whole surface carved with rolling cloud scrolls, and a round head-halo sets the features off with clarity. His robe falls in layered folds across the knees and pours over the edge of the seat to the ground; gilt ornaments trim the corners of the throne and the base, which is ringed with lotus petals. Warm, rich and never gaudy — a piece for a shrine or a quiet room, made for devotion and still contemplation alike.
