This pale wood-toned laughing figure leans back without a care in the world. Bald, long-eared and round-bellied, with his chest bare and his eyes crinkled in a broad grin, he reclines against a pointed-arch back panel as if he had just heard something delightful. One hand rests on his raised knee, holding a string of large prayer beads; the other loosely grips a ruyi sceptre. The robe slips open and falls in broad, flowing folds, and beneath him stretches a carved throne whose front carries scrolling lotus vines over a row of lotus petals. Nothing is painted or gilded — the plain pale wood lets the expression do all the work. He suits an entryway, a tea room or a living room: a welcoming presence that loosens the mood of any space he joins.
