The Little Monk at Prayer

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This golden child monk sits with his palms pressed together in prayer. Bald and round-faced, with a small round mark between his brows, eyes gently closed and a faint smile, he sits cross-legged on a plump lotus bud, his little hands joined neatly at his chest. The plain robe falls from his shoulders in simple folds, two round knees peeking out below — devotion and childhood in equal measure. Beneath the lotus runs a ring of beads, and below that a square plinth whose triangular front panel is carved with curling clouds and floral scrolls. The whole piece is a warm, even gold: no sternness anywhere, only innocence and reverence. It suits a corner of a shrine, a desk or a tea table — small in scale, and quietly steadying to sit beside.
