The Bowl in Both Hands

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned standing bodhisattva cradles a small bowl in both hands. Under a finely worked crown her eyes are lowered in concentration as she stands on a full double lotus pedestal, hands folded one over the other at her waist, fingertips touching, the bowl held level and steady. A delicate necklace ornaments the chest; the long skirt falls in measured pleats with small jewelled chains at the knees, and two long celestial scarves stream down the sides of the body, curling into lively spirals beside her feet. Bright gold-copper on the face, hands and pedestal deepens into brown along the skirt, layering light over shadow. Gentle and devout, she suits a shrine, or a quiet corner of a tea room or study, where she keeps company without saying a word.
