A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record
This standing monk in polychrome carries a tall staff, with a guardian beast crouched at his feet. Shaven-headed and calm of face, he wears a brocade robe pieced from red, gold, blue and green patterns, dense with ornament from collar to hem, prayer beads looped at his wrist. His right hand leans on the staff, its head an openwork golden spray of leaves; the left holds a blue scroll. He stands barefoot on a rocky, uneven base. Beside him crouches a lion-like beast in deep blue-black — a mane of red flame, jaws slightly open, its posture tame as it lifts its head to look up at the man. Elder and beast, standing and seated, gentle and fierce: the group tells a story. A piece for an entryway, tearoom or study, or a narrative highlight in a collection.
