A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record
This polychrome seated bodhisattva rides an elephant, its colours vivid throughout — the richest picture in this batch. The bodhisattva wears a golden crown, the face serene, one hand holding a long-stemmed lotus whose red blooms open in layers beside the shoulder; the robes are vermilion traced with gold, necklaces hang at the chest, and behind, a round halo swirls in red, gold and grey-blue into flame-like contours. Beneath, the white elephant kneels on all fours, head bowed, trunk curled, tusks just showing, a golden harness and red tassels over neck and back; one of the bodhisattva's feet rests lightly on a lotus beside the elephant, perfectly at ease. The base is rolling clouds and waves, gilt alternating with dark tones, holding the whole group as if descending from the clouds. Splendid without gaudiness, this is a piece for a main hall, a reception room or the centre of a shrine — solemn in devotion, and a centrepiece of real presence in a collection.
