Twin Topknots, Teaching Gesture

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned seated figure is marked out at once by its hair, dressed into two round coils standing side by side on the crown. A red dot sits between the brows, the eyes are lowered and closed, and the face is round and at peace. The right hand rises before the body, thumb and forefinger lightly pinched, as if holding a sentence it is about to speak; the left hand hangs at the knee, fingers loosely curled. The robe falls from both shoulders, fastened at the chest by a cloud-scroll clasp, its folds crossing the belly in layers and spreading over the crossed legs in even arcs. The whole piece is a honeyed warm wood tone, seated on a ring of downward-opening lotus petals. Kindly in spirit with a touch of approachability, it suits a home shrine as well as a study or a tea setting — a companion one can face daily without tiring of it, warm and enduring for devotion or display alike.
