A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record
This polychrome standing figure takes a monk's form: shaven head, a darkened face, and eyes cast down, standing upon a blue-green lotus. In his right hand he holds a ringed staff taller than his head, its rings hanging from the finial; in his left, raised at his chest, he cradles a round jewel. Behind him two plain concentric rings form a spare halo that lifts the figure out of the dark ground. The robe is a patchwork of red, green, yellow and black, its painted surface worn and flaking in many places to reveal the ground beneath — a weathering that gives it the air of something long venerated. Below the lotus, the base is a gnarled, root-like rock, and on the rock before him sit a tiny seated figure and a stick of incense, as if a whole mountain crag had been gathered into one work. Austere and steadfast in temperament, it belongs at the side of an altar or in a quiet room — a piece that gives a collector much to dwell on.
