A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record
This seated Buddha rests on a double lotus throne, bright gold from head to foot, his unadorned face all the more solemn for its plainness. The snail-curl hair is finely worked, a small bead crowns the ushnisha, and the eyes gaze downward. The right hand drops past the knee, fingertips pointing to the earth; the left rests palm-up before the belly. The robe crosses one shoulder diagonally, its borders finished with fine patterning, a sash tied in a small knot at the chest, the folds kept crisp and clean over the legs. Beneath the lotus stands a dark square altar plinth carved on every face with fret and scrolling lotus designs, its sober darkness setting off the brightness of the gold. From a distance it is a settled pool of light; up close, it is the weight of one finger touching the ground. Enshrined at the centre of an altar it commands the place; set in a hall, it holds the room — a piece that stands firm for devotion and for collecting alike.
