Antique Gold, Hand Downturned

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This is a small Buddha, finished all over in mottled antique gold, seated on a low reddish-brown plinth. The snail-shell curls are grey-black; the face keeps a hint of a smile through the wear of years. Seated in full lotus, the right hand rests loosely cupped in the lap while the left hangs down over the knee, a small dark object pinched between its fingers. The robe is cut in only a few folds, carved crisply and with force; where the gilding has mottled, a dark ground shows through, like an old thing handled for many years. No halo, no lotus throne — only a plain base, and so the figure has a rustic quiet about it. Made for a writing desk or a small shrine; venerated, it is also a collectible that rewards long looking.
