Pagoda in Openwork Light

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This fully gilded bodhisattva sits in meditation on a great lotus throne, blue hair beneath a tall crown, both hands cradling a small pagoda in the lap, beaded necklaces falling in fine layers. Behind rises an entire openwork aureole — flames and scrolling vines interwoven into a fan-like silhouette, with seven small seated Buddhas set evenly in niches across it. The lotus petals are broad, each tipped with a bright jewel; below is a railed hexagonal platform, its panels carved with scrolling flowers and small jewel finials at the corners. Gold throughout, elaborate yet ordered: carving to study up close, a steady body of light from afar. A centrepiece for a shrine niche, or the anchoring piece of a collection.
