This seated Buddha pairs deep black-brown with brilliant gold. He sits in full lotus on a double golden lotus throne, both hands resting in his lap around a small black bowl, a swastika at his chest, his snail-curl hair dark against the golden jewel at the crown. The robe is a near-black brown, its hems and knee folds traced in gold lines, setting the dark drapery against the bright body. Behind him a tall aureole rises to a flame-edged point, its face covered in fine cloud scrolls, a round halo framing his lowered gaze. The hexagonal base is carved with lotuses and scrolling vines, and a tiny golden worshipper stands at each front corner. The black holds the gold steady and the gold lifts the black — a commanding centre for a shrine, or the solemn anchor of a room.
