This wood-toned bodhisattva sits at ease against a tall backdrop of craggy rock. A plain round halo frames the crowned head; bamboo stalks lean in from the right, while on the left an eagle perches on the rocks with wings half-spread. One knee is raised with the right arm resting loosely across it, the left hand lowered at the side holding a long strand of prayer beads, and a bare foot rests on a lotus pod. Waves and lotus carving meet at the base, and the drapery, necklaces and anklets are all finely cut. A single honey-brown tone gathers the whole scene into one piece of landscape. Full of outdoor air, it suits a tea room, a garden corner, or a sunlit hall — for looking at, and for quieting the mind.
