Holding the Lotus

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva sits upon a great lotus throne, a lotus stem raised in the left hand so that bud and seedpod rest beside the shoulder, the stem crossing the body in a long diagonal. The right hand lowers to the knee, a small round bead held between the fingers. Layered necklaces cross the bare chest, sashes slip from the shoulders, and behind the figure a densely pierced aureole of flame and vine scrolls carries seven small seated Buddhas up to its pointed crest. The honey-brown tone is uniform throughout, fullest in the swelling tiers of lotus petals, like a bloom at its peak. Gentle and unhurried, the piece suits devotion, and shows best placed where good light can draw out its detail.
