Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva sits in full lotus on an enormous multi-layered lotus throne. Crowned and serene, the figure raises the right hand in a mudra before the chest while the left hand, resting at the knee, grips a slender scroll; gauzy drapery falls over the shoulders and beaded necklaces cross the chest. Behind rises a tall aureole pierced throughout with flame and scrolling vine patterns, and seven small seated Buddhas set in teardrop niches climb around the central figure. The lotus throne stacks petal upon petal above a leaf-shaped tray and a carved round base, all in a warm honey-brown tone that glows as if steeped in morning light. Richly worked yet composed, it suits the main position of a shrine, or the calm focal point of a hall.
