Lotus Above the Elephant

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned bodhisattva rides an elephant, the natural pair to the lion-riding figure. He wears a gold-touched crown, his black hair falling in strands beside his shoulders, and sits half-lotus on the back of the reclining elephant. His left hand lifts a lotus high, its stem curving down along his arm, while the right hand steadies the stem before his belly; one foot rests on a small lotus pedestal. The elephant wears a carved floral caparison on its forehead, its long trunk curled into a ring before it, lying quietly on a cloud-patterned base. Behind is the same great oval aureole covered in scrolling clouds, gold touched only at crown, halo ring and jewellery. Warm and serene throughout, it can be enshrined as a pair with the lion figure, or placed alone in a study or quiet room.
