The Guardian Bearing the Jewel

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This wood-toned standing guardian bears a jewel aloft. Crowned, beard on chest, brows knitted and gaze like a torch, he raises his left hand high, palm upturned, cradling a round jewel with the solemnity of an offering; his right grips a small serpent at his waist, its body wound around his wrist, its head rearing between his fingers. The armour is densely carved throughout — an open-mouthed beast face at the centre of the breastplate, layered scales at the shoulders, clearly divided plates on the skirt — while behind him long ribbons spiral and fly, and below, a base of rolling cloud-heads carries drapery swirling down the standing form to join the clouds in one movement. The honeyed wood tone has a warm sheen. It suits a shrine's guardian position, and any entrance needing presence — authority at the gate, light for the arriving guest.
