The Tiger at His Knee

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned seated figure rests with a tiger at his feet. The old man is bald, curls of hair and beard framing his head, and he leans far forward until his chin nearly touches his raised knee, arms folded into the wide robe — as if dozing in deep weariness, or listening for something faint. The robe pours from his shoulders in long, slow folds that layer over the knee and settle across the seat. Before him crouches a tiger, head on crossed paws and gaze lowered, all fierceness put away, as quiet as the figure above it. Man and beast share one rocky seat in stillness, the warm copper deepening the calm. Such a piece suits a study or tea room corner, or quiet devotional contemplation — it carries the ease of one who has seen much of the world.
