Sitting with the Deer

Viewing notes

A viewer's written impression — not a buyer review or first-hand record

This copper-toned seated figure shares its rock with a deer. The old monk sits on a stone platform with both knees drawn up, hands clasped around the knee before him, his body leaning slightly forward and his eyes lowered toward his feet, lost in thought. Beside him a small deer lies with antlers branching upward, its neck gently raised and its head turned toward the viewer, keeping him quiet company. The monk's chest is lean, its rib lines clear; his long robe falls in layers, wrapping his legs and the rock face together, with only two cloth shoes showing. Man and deer, one high and one low, one sitting and one reclining, neither making a sound, yet sharing an understanding that needs no words. This scene wins not by grandeur but by companionship — it belongs in a study, a tea room, or any corner meant to slow people down.
